I will answer your question very unscientifically... In theory you could wear pads with any type of underwear, however you may have to compromise in comfort and protection if the fit is not optimal.
Most women prefer wearing more "classic-cut" underwear during their period, as they find them more comfortable. And while Always is flexible and has double wings that can give you a good hold on most underwear, they were designed with women's habits in mind, which usually do not include wearing pads on thongs ;-)
